Satire is basically what writers use to insult or criticize a person or society. But they'll use a fictional character as the one they are to insult rather than stating an actual person's name. Majority of the time satire is very sarcastic and humorous (Candide by Voltaire is flippin awesome) but usually isn't the authors intention to just have it as comical. They use satire in hopes that the individual or peoples receiving the half-insults improves their character by overcoming his/her weakness('s).
